What type of ceremony can be performed in Tulum?

Legal Ceremony

The legal ceremony has a Spanish-speaking judge and all the subsequent formalities, such as apostille, translation and sending the papers to the bride and groom. So, if you want to make your marriage legal, you will have to go to the Civil Registry and present all the relevant documents. Later on we will explain all the necessary documents for a wedding in Tulum.

Symbolic ceremony

If a traditional marriage is not your thing, in Tulum you can have a symbolic wedding, which has no legal value, but has an officiant who can be local. If it is to the couple’s liking, it can be personalised with readings or religious activities, and a sand reading is offered, at which time two different types of sand of different colours are mixed to symbolise the union of the bride and groom. In appearance it has all the symbols of a conventional wedding.

Religious Ceremony

If it is a Catholic wedding, it can be performed in a church or chapel in Tulum, although only in Spanish. The area has spectacular religious temples full of history and art. However, if your religion is not Catholic but Jewish or Protestant, your wedding can be held on the beach.

Mayan Ceremony

This ceremony is performed by a shaman and consists of a connection of the couple with the Universe and its four cardinal points, which contain a transcendental meaning. In a Mayan wedding ceremony, the papers do not need to be signed, as this is only a ritual of spiritual union that introduces the bride and groom to the four elements: earth, water, fire and air. These elements symbolise energy, harmony and success in marriage to the new couple.

Gay ceremony

Quintana Roo has recognised same-sex marriage since May 2012, and the requirements are exactly the same. This was the second state to recognise same-sex marriage in Mexico, a process that was quite agile due to the fact that its Civil Code did not specify the gender of the people who can perform this union. For a gay ceremony in Tulum, symbolic or Mayan marriages are the trend.
