What does the name Cabo San Lucas mean?

The name was ‘YENECAMÚ’ which is originally a Pericú word that means “place where two waters unite”. After the arrival of the Spanish colonisers and due to the great influx of expeditionaries, the site had several names: Nueva Albión, Puerto Seguro, Reino de Nueva Andalucía and Villa San Felipe.

However, the name that had the greatest impact and by which it was named and known by locals and foreigners alike was Cabo San Lucas, a name given on October 18, 1541 by the Spanish soldier Francisco de Bolaños on the very day dedicated in the Catholic saints’ calendar to Saint Luke the Evangelist.

On 27 June 1542, the name Cabo San Lucas was applied for the first time in a document and, as noted, Cabo San Lucas is so called because of the geographical formation on which it is located: a cape; and because of the apostle of the Christian religion: San Lucas. However, the correct name is Cabo De San Lucas, which over time was lost until the “de” was removed.
